The Kanawha Valley is home to a Bayer MaterialScience polyurethane manufacturing plant and a technical center, both situated in the city of South Charleston and acquired from Lyondell Chemical Company when Bayer purchased Lyondell's global polyols business in early 2000. Millions of pounds of polyols -- a polyurethane raw material -- flow from the plant annually, and they are eventually used in such consumer products as automotive seating foam, furniture foam, footwear and recreational items.
Bayer
also has a strong presence in New Martinsville, WV, with a 1000+ acre site
founded in 1954 along the Ohio River -- the first polyurethane manufacturing
