Notification
of an Emergency:
If there is an emergency, you
might be given warning in one or more ways.
- Warning sirens are located in
many of the urban areas of the county. You will hear a steady high pitched
tone of the siren for three minutes and repeated several times. When this
occurs, turn on a radio or television to an Emergency Alert System (EAS)
station for further instruction. (The siren system is tested the last
Wednesday of each month, beginning at noon.)
- Emergency service vehicles
with loud speakers may provide emergency warnings
- Tone Alert Radios
- Warnings on televisions

What
to do in case you need to Shelter-In-Place
- First, remain calm.
- If you are outdoors, go
inside immediately (an interior room without windows is preferable).
Bring pets indoors.
- Do not call 911 unless
you are reporting an immediate life-threatening situation.
- Do not attempt to get
your children from their school or day care center. Staff members are
trained to protect your children and will institute shelter-in-place
procedures where they are located.
- Retrieve your Shelter-In-Place kit.
- If the emergency involves hazardous
material, you should do the following:
- Turn off heating and cooling systems.
- Turn off window and other fans
- Close all windows and
doors. Place pre-cut plastic sheeting over windows, and tape in
place.
- Cover cracks under
doors with damp towels. If you have a fireplace, put out the fire
and close the damper.
- If you are instructed
to protect breathing, cover your nose and mouth with a cloth – wet
if possible.
- Continue to listen
carefully to a portable radio for instructions from emergency
officials – after the emergency is over, and the "All
Clear" is given, open windows, turn on fans to ventilate the
house and go outside.
