Wildlife Habitat Project At Technology Park
The Wildlife Habitat Project is an initiative to create a habitat for native plants and wildlife on approximately 45 acres of grassy/wooded land at the South Charleston, WV Technology Park complex of Union Carbide Corporation, a subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Company (“Dow”).
The habitat project was adopted as part of the EPA National Environmental Performance Track Program. Performance Track is a voluntary partnership program that encourages continuous environmental improvement through the use of environmental management systems, community involvement, and measurable environmental improvements.
The project is a collaborative effort between Union Carbide Corporation, a subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Company (“Dow”) and members of the South Charleston community.
Objectives
Protection & enhancement of biological diversity native to the S. Charleston area
•Comprehensive monitoring/inventory process for plants & animals established
•Invasive plants abated & controlled; native vegetation restored
•Bird houses built in safe and appropriate areas of site
Engagement with community
•Community members, particularly community advisory members, included in project management team
•Accessibility to site improved with walkways, safety guidelines
•The project effectively communicated
Promotion of environmental education
•Student/ teacher included on project management team
•Curriculum developed & funded to support habitat as learning resource
